This bug report seems to be the most similar to my problem.

Problem: With latest Karmic (KDE) installed, my fan runs very fast (annoyingly loud).
Computer: Dell Studio 1747: Intel i7-720QM chip.
Both /proc/acpi/fan and /proc/acpi/thermal_zone are empty.
Running sensors_detect results in "Sorry, no sensors were detected"
Booting with acpi_enforce_resources=lax does not help.

Is this the right place to ask for a solution? If so, what information do you need? (dmesg output, ...).
If not, I can open a new bug.
