Interestingly, this problem seemed to 'go away' a few weeks ago with an update, but returned again last week. Since I update regularly but don't always test whether or not the suspend and hibernate functions still work, I don't know specifically which update relieved the problem and which caused the relapse. Right now, my laptop neither sleeps nor hibernates.
