if khubd is crashing, nothing else will change. Also check with "lsof" to see if something grabs the /dev/ttyUSB0.
Also, which kernel? uname -a. I'm running the proposed and have no trouble with arduinos or ftdi breakouts. (except RTS-reset, but that's another bug).
