Bug Description

Hey. I have the following config:

AMD Processor
Asus A8N32-SLi Deluxe
2 GB RAM
9600 GT
Audigy SE.

The point here is, with 9.04 I could reboot into Windows without losing sound on either of my soundcards, but now with 9.10 daily 15/10/09 I cannot. If i restart from 9.10 to Windows, Audigy gives no sound. This doesn't verify if instead of doing a restart, shutdown instead. I think this problem can be relacionated with pulseaudio or even the sound driver.

affects: ubuntu → linux (Ubuntu)

I confirm this problem. Despite the refreshed drivers from Creative, after reboot Ubuntu 9.10 to Windows (XP and 7) the sound is absent. The problem disappears after computer disconnecting.

I confirm too. The problem arise booting on Windows after using Ubuntu. Maybe it's related to some soundcard's switch.

Turn on PC -> Ubuntu 9.10 (audio Ok) -> reboot -> Windows (no audio)
Turn on PC -> Windows (audio Ok)

Ubuntu 9.10 64-bit
AMD Athlon X2 (NForce5 chipset)
Audigy SE

Same in here. Confirming this bug in 9.10 and Windows 7, both 32bit versions.

Turn on PC, boot Windows - Sound Works
Turn on PC, boot Ubuntu - Sound Works
Turn on PC, boot Windows, THEN Ubuntu - Sound Works, both times.
Turn on PC, boot Linux, THEN Windows - Sound Works only in Ubuntu
Turn on PC, boot Windows, then Linux, THEN Windows - Sound works until 3rd reboot.
Turn on PC, boot Linux, then Windows, then Linux - Sound works at 1st and at 3rd time.

With a Creative SoundBlaster Audigy SE.

I concur with Arecross' analysis. Could it be that Ubuntu is not releasing the sound card resources correctly?

I was lucky to find a solution to this problem, when reading about other problem. When you edit /etc/init.d/alsa-utils, and comment the 378th line:

# mute_and_zero_levels "$TARGET_CARD" || EXITSTATUS=1

the sound seems to work properly after restart from Ubuntu to Windows. Hope it will work for you too.

The solution was posted by Gavindi in this bug report: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/pulseaudio/+bug/352732

It seems like that did it. Thanks for the tip =)

Now, what I'm wondering is... is that line necessary?
Also, seems kinda weird too - isn't Ubuntu using PulseAudio?

Yes, Ubuntu uses PulseAudio. Maybe you will find this diagram interesting:

So why doesn't ubuntu release new alsa packages with the offending line removed?

The fix also works with me... I can't find anything wrong by commenting the line, someone that has had a problem please write here.

What I can read from the file is that the line that we comment is part of the alsa shutdown sequence.

this fix doesnt work for me on 11.04
there is no file named alsa-utils in /etc/init.d/
only alsa-store and alsa-restore

what to do now ?

Dark_Webster, thank you for reporting this bug to Ubuntu. Karmic reached EOL on April 30, 2011.
Please see this document for currently supported Ubuntu releases:

This bug was reported a while ago and there hasn't been any activity in it recently. We were wondering if this is still an issue? If so, could you please provide information following https://wiki.ubuntu.com/DebuggingSoundProblems ? As well, can you try with the latest development release of Ubuntu? ISO CD images are available from http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/releases/ .

If it remains an issue, could you run the following command from a Terminal (Applications->Accessories->Terminal). It will automatically gather and attach updated debug information to this report.

apport-collect -p linux <replace-with-bug-number>

Also, if you could test the latest upstream kernel available that would be great. It will allow additional upstream developers to examine the issue. Refer to https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelMainlineBuilds . Once you've tested the upstream kernel, please remove the 'needs-upstream-testing' tag. This can be done by clicking on the yellow pencil icon next to the tag located at the bottom of the bug description and deleting the 'needs-upstream-testing' text. Please let us know your results.

Thanks in advance.
