Got about the same problem with the Atheros 928 (on Acer Extensa 5230). The problem started in Karmic: after about 1 minute signalstrength drops with 20 dB. I use WICD.
I installed the 2.6.31.17 generic-pae kernel (instead of the e 2.6.31.17 generic), and the problem was solved.
It has returned with the update to the new kernel: the 2.6.31.19 generic and the 2.6.31.19 generic-pae kernel both show the same problem. So I´m still on the 17-pae version.
The Ubuntu team seems to be aware of the problem, and I read (a couple of months ago) on the net that it would be solved in the near future. So I´m quite disappointed that in both new kernels it has not been solved.
