The development release referenced above fixes the problem reported. Commenting out the /etc/X11/default-display-manager causes a command line login to occur and removing the comment in /etc/X11/default-display-manager re-establishes the gui login screen and an OS is found on reboot.
The upstream kernel also fixes the problem. This was tested with only the upstream kernel. The upstream headers did not load properly.
