I've downgraded to 2.6.30-020630-generic on my karmic:

- no more pops and clicks
- video seems fine now!

For info, I've found this kernel here:

You will have to create the file "/etc/udev/rules.d/50-udev.rules" according to the procedure described over here:

It seems this issue is due to a regression between 2.6.30 and 2.6.31
