Same problem here.

Pulseaudio volume control is "linked" to the "Master" of Alsa. But Inspiron 9400 main channel is "PCM". Master=front speaker and LFE=subwoofer. PCM allows user to adjust both.

Pulseaudio should be "linked" to PCM for this model.
