Sorry for being quiet for so long... In the meantime I have helped testing bugfixes of the issue from the linux-usb mailing list.
The issue should be resolved upstream, see the following commit:

I have also back-ported the patch to Karmic's current kernel source, see attachment. Ubuntu devs, what would be needed to roll this out in a Karmic update?
