Tim Gardner: Tried that new kernel. The problem recurred (and the kernel was slow to boot). Have a Dell D410 so used the i386 kernel. Cold rebooted 3 times, still no improvement.

#32 is still working for me (I did remove the modprobe.d conf before generating the initrd for the new kernel)
