i should have said that i use an dell latitude d620. still the problem remains the same.

victor: daniel posted a patch for the alsa-drivers which got included in their lates version 1.0.13rc1. have your tried this version? it is not in the repositories but you can download it from http://www.alsa-project.org/. could you try this and see if it helps?
