Personally I have always used "nomodeset" with my Extensa 5635z and it works fine 100%, but I guess they both do exactly the same thing.

https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KarmicKoala/ReleaseNotes speaks of both "nomodeset" and "i915.modeset=0".

And graphics on my 5635z with kernel mode setting switched off are NOT slower than on my otherwise very similar 5630z with KMS.
