Running with 9.10 and linux-backports-modules-karmic-generic, I am no longer seeing the crashes (which made the wifi connection unusable). I was even able to return from hibernation and immediately reconnect. I am still seeing occasional stalls, but nowhere near as bad as 9.4 was; I am testing with the "power off" option as well.
IMNSHO, there is absolutely no way that 9.10 should ship with the existing kernel.
