Had the permission issues with Karmic also. Original box was upgraded from Jaunty....and all mounts showed up as ro, without being able to fix it with an rw setting. Directories mounted into also had their ownership changed to root.
file_mode=0777,dir_mode=0777 fixed the permission problems....this is with smbfs. Seems the default settings have been changed in 9.10, given all my commands were pulled from this page:
This will definitely cause major problems for anyone not expecting the change and without the time or expertise to search the planet for a fix (took me a few hours to locate this fix).
