I forwarded the bug upstream and will discuss the proper solution with David.

But for the record, if a proper solution doesn't land in time, I now know how to trivially fix this bug for karmic. If nothing else helps, we can just disable "can_detach" completely, to pretty much get back the behaviour from Jaunty. However, first I want to get a deeper understanding why this was introduced in the first place.
