Hopeful that the rear audio jack would work, I reenabled pulseaudio, rebooted and logged in and had the login sound. Interestingly, 'paplay /usr/share/sounds/ubuntu/stereo/desktop-login.ogg' just hung. 'aplay /usr/share/sounds/ubuntu/stereo/desktop-login.ogg' resulted in horrible screeching noises.
