Bug Description

I've installed Dapper Drake with latest updates on my Acer TravelMate 3012WTMi and there is no sound.
WinXP knows this sound card as Realtek HD Audio (ALC883)

I can provide more information if needed.

I just downloaded breezy live CD. It is simply unusable on my laptop. All network interfaces doesn't work. Xserver fails to start. An error message appears every 10 seconds on console.

Do you know how to check if a sound card works from the command line of breezy live CD?

you can see if the kernel loads the correct modules using this command lsmod ,you will have the full list of them, also you can try out the sound using the speaker-test command, it alwais worked for my computer.
You can also check this forum page http://www.ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=26567, it was written for hoary but you can try some of the solutions that are inside it.I wait more informations.

"speaker-test" does not produce any noise on breezy, the same with dapper.

breezy loads a lot of modules, including snd_hda_intel.

have you tried the method written on the forum page i gave to you before? Also be sure that volume control is active and not muted , im telling you this because i have found time ago a frend that was having the same problem of you but the only thing that wasnt ok ,was the volume control. Check out that and try to give a look to the forum page. Also i suggest you to try booting your pc using another kernel maybe an old one ,like the 2.6.12-15 and so on. If you do it, tell me how its gone.

No, speakers or microphone are not muted. I followed the above mentioned howto but settings seems OK to me.

lsof /dev/snd/*
COMMAND PID USER FD TYPE DEVICE SIZE NODE NAME
mixer_app 5341 petrme 36u CHR 116,0 9689 /dev/snd/controlC0

However there is no sound. Even "Sound Recorder" records "silent" ogg files.

When I installed Dapper for the first time it has the 2.6.12-18 kernel. Is's 2.6.15-20 now but the sound has never worked. The same with Dapper 6.06 Beta Live CD.

Oops, there is a typo.
For the first time I installed Dapper with the 2.6.15-18 kernel, not the 2.6.12-18 one.

FYI this laptop has Intel 945GM Express chipset and I don't know if it's supported in an older kernel.

I only tested the breezy live CD. Unfortunately, I don't have another free partition. I didn't manage to have the working breezy desktop. But I didn't try very hard.

Dapper is much better and right now the missing sound is the most annoying thing for me.

I'm testing the edgy distribution with alsa-driver-1.0.12rc1 and with the ALC883 it also fails.

At alsa web-site the changelog for 1.0.12rc2 says that they support the ALC883 finally with the snd_hda_intel driver.

Guess this is a posible correction.

I've also got an 82801G (ICH7 Family) High Definition Audio Controller (rev 02) on my Gateway MX1023 laptop with no sound, and am running Edgy Eft with the latest updates.

Does anyone have any information on whether a fix for this will make it into the release?

regarding my Acer TravelMate 3012WTMi. I run feisty now, and everything works, except the mic-input on the front
of the laptop. It works, but the signal is not boosted. I tried plugging my portable mediaplayer, and as its signal
is higher than a bare microphone, it works.
In windows, the sound applet of the soundcare has a "Mic Boost" checkbox.
That is what is missing in Linux.

worked out-of-the-box in ubuntu 7.04, doesn't work out-of-the-box in ubuntu 7.10. No sound driver was loaded.

This may be because I had the -386 kernel installed due to nvidia-glx-new drivers. After manually installing the "linux-ubuntu-modules-2.6.22-14-386" package, I had the necessary driver (snd-hda-intel.ko - /lib/modules/2.6.22-14-386/ubuntu/media/snd-hda-intel/snd-hda-intel.ko) and I could modprobe it and have a sound device.

If you are not using the -386 kernel, this driver will be found in the "linux-ubuntu-modules-2.6.22-14-generic" package instead. Also, instead of manually installing the linux-ubuntu-modules-*-* package, you should install either "linux-386" or "linux-generic" and then that will automatically depend on the latest kernel and module packages.
