This is disappointing news. The open-source drivers still don't have
power management support--only with the Catalyst driver can I control
the fan speed of my 4770 card (a firmware update to the card caused
the fan to idle at higher-than-normal speed, preventing it from
running silently unless I manually reduce the speed). And, of course,
right as Valve is about to release Steam for Linux, AMD drops support
for cards that are still very useful.
