Well, as I indicated, I am using the open source drivers and the laptop
works just fine now.

Although I haven't tried any 3D games on it of course. ;)

I don't know if the ATI drivers have fixed this bug, and since this is
my work laptop I don't really need 3D - that's my recommendation unless
you want to play games (or use Google Earth).
