For what it's worth, I've seen a similar error on kernel upgrades before (upgrading to Karmic will suffice likely). I'd suggest that you login with the lower resolution as you describe in your report, and navigate to System -> Administration -> Hardware Drivers and see if you can install some new drivers. It might be worth a shot.
