I've found a dirty fix to make sound available again:
You have to obtain kernel source and remove or comment line 17138 and recompile it:
alsa-kernel/
{ .id = 0x10ec0272, .name = "ALC272", .patch = patch_alc662 }
More info: https:/

I assume the same workaround you mentioned in comment 47 still applies and works for the latest Karmic?

Hi Daniel,
I happened to come across the following thread on the alsa-devel mailing list, "realtec ALC272 support":
http://
And it seemed to reference a patch to enable audio:
There also seemed to be a series of patches which followed to mute the speakers when the headphones are plugged in:
And then enable the microphone:
Do you have any opinion on if these look sane and if we should push harder to get these upstream? From the thread it seemed communication dropped off due to no longer having access to the hw.
@Antonio, it would be interesting if you could test at least the first patch and confirm if it at least brings back sound.
Antonio Sánchez (antoniosanchez) wrote : | #51 |
Hi Leann,
We have try to adapt first patch to jaunty alsa sources (because doesn't apply directly) and compile it, but we don't get sound working after that.
Leann Ogasawara (leannogasawara) wrote : | #52 |
Hi Antonio,
Can you try testing with the following patched Karmic kernel I've put at:
http://
If sound still fails to work, while you've still got this kernel running can you once against run:

Did you test the kernel from within a Jaunty or Karmic install?
Antonio Sánchez (antoniosanchez) wrote : | #55 |
We've tested the kernel in Jaunty. We need to use a stable version in these machines.
Leann Ogasawara (leannogasawara) wrote : | #56 |
Ah, I'll try building a test kernel for Jaunty then. The Karmic kernels have KMS enabled. However please note that in order for us to propose this for a Stable Release update to Jaunty we'll need to confirm this is first fixed and applied in Karmic before we can backport. See https:/

Should be able to disable KMS from the kernel command line via bootloader config
Leann Ogasawara (leannogasawara) wrote : | #58 |
Good point Daniel.
Antonio, care to retry that test kernel I posted but boot with the "nomodeset"? This can be done by pressing the 'Escape' key at the 3 second pause by Grub bootloader. Then press 'e' (edit) on the buggy kernel entry, followed by 'e' again on the kernel line. Then add "nomodeset" (without quotes) and press 'b' to boot.
Antonio Sánchez (antoniosanchez) wrote : | #59 |
Leann, sound is working properly with linux-image-

Thanks Antonio, sounds promising. Can you also test that :
1) The speakers muste when the headphones are plugged in (and sound indeed comes out of the headphones). If not, I'll likely need to have you also test the following patch:
2) The microphone works. And again, if it doesn't we'll likely need the following:
James Brinkerhoff (jwb-paravolve) wrote : | #62 |
I can confirm that the updated jaunty kernel does resolve the sound via speakers issue and the headphone jack continues to work, however it seems the microphone does not work nor does sound cut off from the speakers when the headphones are plugged in.
Leann Ogasawara (leannogasawara) wrote : | #63 |
Hi Antonio,
I've applied the patches to Jaunty which should mute the speakers when headphones are plugged in and also enable the microphone. I've put the test kernels at the same location:
http://
Please test and let us know your results. I'll build the corresponding Karmic kernels as well and post them shortly for testing as well. Thanks.
James Brinkerhoff (jwb-paravolve) wrote : | #64 |
The .51 kernel seems to resolve the headphones /w speakers on problem, but the mic still appears to be non functional (or at least, I can't seem to get any input with any of the apps I've tried)
Leann Ogasawara (leannogasawara) wrote : | #65 |
Thanks for the feedback James.
Antonio, it would be great if you could confirm if the same happens for you.
I'm also just adding a note that the Karmic test packages have finished building. I've moved each of the test packages into their respective "karmic" and "jaunty" directories:

It would be great to get testing feedback for both Jaunty and Karmic (noting that James tested for Jaunty). ie
Thanks in advance guys.
dimeotane (phattunez) wrote : | #66 |
I've installed the patched kernel on Ubuntu Netbook Remix - Karmic and now I've got sound on my headphones and speaker!!! Thankyou!!
I added to my alsa-base.conf
options snd-hda-intel model=toshiba (model=ALC272 also works)
No luck getting the internal mic to work however with that.
alsamixer gives the option for capture input source to be D-mic or Ext-mic, but these don't seem to work.
strangely enough model=auto seems to give different options for the mic and I can see on the levels that it is sensing sound in the internal mic, but it won't play back audio.
Antonio Sánchez (antoniosanchez) wrote : | #67 |
Hi Leann,
thank you very much for your kernel packages. We spend a lot of time compiling to apply patches.
Using linux-image-
- Sounds works through speakers
- When plug headphones, speakers mute properly and sounds go through headphones.
- I'm not able to record any sound using the internal mic with gnome-sound-
Using linux-image-
I'll try to test sound recording with an external mic.
Leann Ogasawara (leannogasawara) wrote : | #68 |
Hi Guys,
So I've slightly modified the microphone patch to see if it helps. I've uploaded a new Jaunty test kernel to:
http://
Please uninstall any previous test kernels you have installed prior to installing this latest 2.6.28-
Just for additional information, you can always check the version of the kernel you are running by running the following command in a Terminal just to make sure you are testing/running the kernel you intend to:
cat /proc/version_
Thanks again and let me know your results.
Antonio Sánchez (antoniosanchez) wrote : | #69 |
Hi Leann, good news, sound recording is working with your new path.

You have to speak louder near the mic but everything is working, play and recording.
Thank you so much!
dimeotane (phattunez) wrote : | #70 |
Antonio, wonderful news that everything is working now! For the weak mic levels. Have you tried adjusting your levels using a combination of alsamixer in the terminal (including capture settings) as well as the gnome volume mic settings? Sometimes I find I needed to set both to get it right. Also, what is your alsa-base.conf model setting as?
Thankyou Leann for your hard work coding for us! Will there be a new patch for karmic?
Leann Ogasawara (leannogasawara) wrote : | #71 |
Thanks for testing and the feedback guys. If you'd be so kind, I'm actually going to build one more test kernel to see if I can slim down that microphone patch at all. I'm in the process of building it now. I'll post a new link when it's ready. Based on you're feedback I'll craft finalized patches/test kernels for both Karmic and Jaunty.
I'm going to do my best to try to get this accepted into both Karmic and Jaunty. However, I first need to submit these patches upstream to get feedback, probably make changes (and ask for more testing), and then hopefully it'll find it's way into Karmic and Jaunty.

@Chris or @Antonio,
Could one of you try a stock Karmic kernel (for ex 2.6.31-9.29 was most recently released) and let me know the results of:
1) playback through internal speakers: [OK or Not OK]
2) speakers mute when headphones plugged in (and sound is heard through headphones): [OK or Not OK]
3) recording through the internal mic: [OK or Not OK]
4) recording through an external mic: [OK or Not OK]
Can you then try and modify /etc/modprobe.
Chris Starling (chris-starling) wrote : | #114 |
I installed 2.6.31-6.29 on my jaunty install, but I'm back to having the same problem as in Antonio's comment #53 -- it seems that gdm freezes and the whole machine is unresponsive (ie, can't alt-f1 to get text-mode prompt). I tried disabling KMS in grub by adding "nomodeset" to the kernel's boot parameters and I've also created /etc/modprobe.
Any ideas? Or should I just install karmic and try out this kernel with it?
Chris Starling (chris-starling) wrote : | #115 |
I tried the opposite approach this morning and ENABLED KMS in jaunty with the 2.6.31-9.29 kernel by following these instructions: https:/
$ cat /proc/version_
Ubuntu 2.6.31-9.29-386
1. playback NOT OK
2. headphones NOT OK
3. internal mic OK
4. external mic not tested
I tried:
model=toshiba
model=auto
no model line
Also, it has the additional devices in the mixer, much like "model=auto" in the "oga3" kernel.
Incidentally, startup time seems slightly slower with KMS enabled.
Antonio Sánchez (antoniosanchez) wrote : | #116 |
Hi Leann, Chris,
I've tried with karmic installing linux-image-
usuario@nb200:~$ cat /proc/version_
Ubuntu 2.6.31-9.29-generic
1) playback through internal speakers: Not OK
2) speakers mute when headphones plugged in (and sound is heard through headphones): Not OK, headphones don't work.
3) recording through the internal mic: OK
4) recording through an external mic: Not OK, when an external mic is plugged gnome-sound-
Leann Ogasawara (leannogasawara) wrote : | #117 |
Hi Chris and Antonio,
Thanks again for the all the testing and quick feedback. I have one more Karmic image for you guys. Please test and let me know if the 4 test cases are OK or not. Thanks.
Chris Starling (chris-starling) wrote : | #118 |
Installed new kernel on my jaunty setup:
$ cat /proc/version_
Ubuntu 2.6.31-
1) playback through internal speakers: OK
2) speakers mute when headphones plugged in (and sound is heard through headphones): OK
3) recording through the internal mic: Not OK
4) recording through an external mic: OK
This is with no "model=" set, however setting "model=toshiba" made no difference.
Antonio Sánchez (antoniosanchez) wrote : | #119 |
I get the same behaviour than Chris in #188 but installing linux-image-
1) playback through internal speakers: OK
2) speakers mute when headphones plugged in (and sound is heard through headphones): OK
3) recording through the internal mic: Not OK
4) recording through an external mic: OK
Pietro (pietro) wrote : | #120 |
Hi all, I see that you have resolved for Jaunty and have moved on to Karmic. As a mezzo-newbie user, I am wondering if you could post a quick HowTo for installing the patched oga2 Kernel mentioned in comment #94? I downloaded the .deb and installed, but when I looked for it in / I could not find it. So I am not sure how to edit /boot/grub/menu.lst to access this patched kernel, nor whether there is some entirely different way I should boot to use this kernel. Perhaps there is a page which explains all this and you could just post a link as a reply to this. Cheers.
bushnoh (bushnoh) wrote : | #121 |
You need the patched linux-image found here (one of the bottom two):
http://
No need to edit menu.lst, just install and restart.
Adam (awynne) wrote : | #122 |
i installed 2.6.28-15-generic #50~lp389040oga3 and found that the internal mic doesn't work. i tried modifying levels in alsamixer and the builtin gnome mixer without any luck
1) playback through internal speakers: OK
2) speakers mute when headphones plugged in (and sound is heard through headphones): OK
3) recording through the internal mic: Not OK
4) recording through an external mic: not tested
Pietro (pietro) wrote : | #123 |
Bushnoh, thanks for clarification (comment #121). Based on Chris Starling's comment #95 I installed oga2, and:
1. Playback works through built-in speaker.
2. Playback works through headphones, & built-in speaker mutes when headphones jacked in.
3. Recording through internal mic does NOT work; choppy static recorded thru both Skype test call and Gnome-sound-record. Sound Device is set to HDA Intel (ALSA mixer), all tracks turned on in Preferences, volume up.
Based on Starling's comment #93, I looked in /etc/modprobe.
Furthermore is it OK to keep trying to thrash out Jaunty issues, or are you all moved on to Karmic now?
Murphi (martin-engelmann) wrote : | #124 |
I'm now using the kernel from post #117 on my Debian Squeeze system on the Toshiba NB200.
To ged rid of apt's messages complaining about missing wireless-crda I installed the karmic version of it, too.
1) playback through internal speakers: OK
2) speakers mute when headphones plugged in (and sound is heard through headphones): OK
3) recording through the internal mic: Not OK
4) recording through an external mic: OK
Thanks for the fix. I'm looking forward to see it in Debian Squeeze soon. *g*
Rainer Oliveira (raineroliveira) wrote : | #125 |
I using Ubuntu Jaunty on Toshiba nb205 (which have the same sound bug).
Using the kernel from post #117 fixes the sound problem for me (from speakers and headphones), but i didnt test (yet) the microphone (since i dont use it).
In my /etc/modprobe.
I just think that the sound is low (actually, is more like "ambient sound" in the highest volume), but i cant say it's a patch problem because i didnt test the sound in other systems (Ubuntu is my number one) =)
This patch should be made upstream for Karmic.
Thanks for the fix!
Leann Ogasawara (leannogasawara) wrote : | #126 |
Via bug 438318, a much simpler patch to workaround this issue has been sent upstream and since accepted for Karmic. For now I'm marking this as a duplicate of that bug. I'll inquire there about the Jaunty SRU. Thanks!
