I have the same issue with a laptop gigabyte m1405: Touchpad do not work neither under X, neither with gpm.
It is detected as a "Macintosh mouse button emulation"
in dmesg: input: Macintosh mouse button emulation as /devices/virtual/input/input4
in /var/log/Xorg.log: (II) config/udev: Adding input device Macintosh mouse button emulation (/dev/input/event4)
but from dmidecode: Handle 0x000D, DMI type 21, 7 bytes Built-in Pointing Device Type: Touch Pad Interface: PS/2 Buttons: 4
