Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu better. Please execute the following command, as it will automatically gather debugging information, in a terminal:

apport-collect -p alsa-base 376278

This will help us to find and resolve the problem. Bear in mind that you may need to install the python-launchpadlib package from the universe repository. Additionally, when prompted to give apport-collect permissions for Launchpad you will need to give it at least the ability to "Change Non-Private" data as it will be adding information to your bug report. Thanks in advance!

Hi Pablo,

If you could also please test the latest upstream kernel available that would be great. It will allow additional upstream developers to examine the issue. Refer to https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelMainlineBuilds . Once you've tested the upstream kernel, please remove the 'needs-upstream-testing' tag. This can be done by clicking on the yellow pencil icon next to the tag located at the bottom of the bug description and deleting the 'needs-upstream-testing' text. Please let us know your results.

Thanks in advance.

Hello to all concerned ,

The internal microphone on my Toshiba SatelliteP505D-S8935 laptop also did not work .

I installed the latest upstream kernel as suggested by Jeremy Foshee in post # 14
and the mic now works .

Note that I also installed Gnome Alsa Mixer which allowed me to choose from the 4 mics which now shows up .
The gnome volume panel applet does not give any indication of the extra mics so make sure and install Gnome Alsa Mixer.

Thanks again Jeremy.

Best regards ,

John Boyd.

I want to add that when using Ubuntu 9.04 we tried uninstaling ALSA and installing OSS, and then the microphone worked very slightly--we could at least hear ourselves when using the sound recorder. But then we uninstalled it and reinstalled ALSA and then the microphone again did not work at all.

Given this information, will your procedure work or should we do something different with ALSA?

I have the same issue with almost the same laptop, mine is a Toshiba Satellite U405-S2856. Notice that this bug is duplicated in https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/alsa-driver/+bug/575598, so that makes at least 3 of us.

I have noticed that USB mics do work.

My thought is to update ALSA to version 1.0.23 which seems to have solved the problem for newer versions of Toshiba (Toshiba Satellite M300 and Toshiba M305-S4830) following instructions in http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?p=6589810#post6589810. Any advice as to whether this is a good idea?

I uninstalled PulseAudio and with that, Skype and other Voip programs work. This solved the problem for Toshiba U405D-S2848 and jfor Satellite L305-S5937

Having the same problem on Maverick 10.10, Lenovo X200, amd64.

No sound in gnome-sound-recorder, checked in alsamixer and microphone volume is up.

cat /proc/asound/card0/codec#* | grep Codec

Codec: Conexant CX20561 (Hermosa)

Any info I can share to help resolve this issue?

As mentioned in my note above on 31 December 2010, I uninstalled Pulse Audio and use only Alsa, and now everything works. It isn't ideal, since I forfeit using PUlse Audio, but now the microphone works and that is a plus. To control volume settings I use the Alsa mixer.
