I have this same problem with 00:1e.2 Multimedia audio controller: Intel Corporation 82801FB/FBM/FR/FW/FRW (ICH6 Family) AC'97 Audio Controller (rev 03)

I have solved it booting fedora 11 with 2.6.29.5-191.fc11.i586, the first kernel of its lifecycle. Using that kernel (same userland) the sound works.
