Another note: when I use VLC in -v mode, it shows this:

[00000548] main audio output debug: audio output is starving (24643), playing silence
[00000548] alsa audio output debug: recovered from buffer underrun
[00000548] main audio output warning: output date isn't PTS date, requesting resampling (48890)
[00000548] main audio output warning: buffer is 48582 late, triggering upsampling
