Bug Description

Since, the fresh install of Ubuntu Jaunty Jackalope 9.04 i am experiencing mouse issues. Each time the only way to fix the problem is to reboot. i can't recreate the problem and it comes always unexpectedly. Sometimes it just freezes and disappears and i can only navigate with keyboard.

Just now i had Rhythmbox, Xchat, Cgoban (kgs-go server) and Firefox open. I was writing an email when i suddenly couldn't move around with the mouse the email was scrolling up and down on its own. I was able to calm this by swithing to another window using contr.+alt+arrows.

Again using contr.+alt+arrows i could switch workspaces and go to Xchat for eg and even type (keyboard) in the dialog but couldn't access File tab for eg... only way to correct this debilitating experience is to reboot.

Also, just now, i switched workspace and the screen flickered hectically and uncontrollably from one workspace to another. I did not lose mouse this time however and the system finally stabilized.

I have a microsoft IntelliMouse Optical usb and PS/2 compatible mouse.
I installed 32-bit 9.04 with ext4 on pc

Same bug here after upgrading Gutsy to Jaunty. The mouse clicks are disabled and nothing can be clicked. What it's strange is that the scroll button continues to work: I can scroll a page in firefox but cannot click anything. The only way to solve this is to reboot the machine. The bug seems to appear more often when using firefox.

Synaptics is the trouble. Desinstalling synaptic supports remove this bug but there is no touchpad support in this case...

I have the same problem (on Jaunty 9.04), and originally thought it was like bug #228746. However, that one seems to lead to more general USB failures, while I only encounter a random hang with USB mice (the USB keyboard still works, but re-inserting the mouse, or another one, does not help to resolve the problem.

My machine is a 64-bit ext3 system, so those two parameters seem to be irrelevant (I cannot test with PS/2 mice because there is no PS/2 port).

In my case, removing xserver-xorg-input-synaptics does not solve the problem.

So the bug is maybe not exactly the same. Synaptic was the trouble for me as removing the X module disable the touchpad but a regular usb mouse works fine with no bug.

could you check (if is possible) in latest version included in Karmic if this issue is still happening? Thanks in advance.

My problem turned out to go away with an update of the bios. See my comment in bug #228746.

Hi,

the issue seems to have disappeared in Karmic.

livingdaylight, thank you for reporting this and helping make Ubuntu better. Jaunty reached EOL on October 23, 2010.
Please see this document for currently supported Ubuntu releases:
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Releases

We were wondering if this is still an issue in a supported release? If so, can you try with the latest development release of Ubuntu? ISO CD images are available from http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/releases/ .

If it remains an issue, could you run the following command in a supported release from a Terminal (Applications->Accessories->Terminal). It will automatically gather and attach updated debug information to this report.

apport-collect -p linux <replace-with-bug-number>

Also, if you could test the latest upstream kernel available that would be great. It will allow additional upstream developers to examine the issue. Refer to https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelMainlineBuilds . Once you've tested the upstream kernel, please remove the 'needs-upstream-testing' tag. This can be done by clicking on the yellow pencil icon next to the tag located at the bottom of the bug description and deleting the 'needs-upstream-testing' text.

If this bug is fixed in the mainline kernel, please add the following tag 'kernel-fixed-upstream'.

If the mainline kernel does not fix this bug, please add the tag: 'kernel-bug-exists-upstream'.

If you are unable to test the mainline kernel, for example it will not boot, please add the tag: 'kernel-unable-to-test-upstream'.

Please let us know your results. Thanks in advance.
