Bug Description

After upgrading to Ubuntu 9.04 64 bit from Ubuntu 8.10 64 bit, flash will no longer play sound. I am using the most recent flashplugin-nonfree from the Ubuntu repositories. The machine I am having trouble on is a Dell Vostro 200. I also have a Dell XPS 1530 laptop that I upgraded to Ubuntu 9.04 64 bit and flash works perfectly on it. I started a thread on the Ubuntu forums at http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1135978 and it appears that several other people are having the same problem.

affects: ubuntu → linux (Ubuntu)

Martin Holmes (mholmes) wrote :

I have seen this problem with 8.10 and 9.04, and I think the heart of it is that there's nowhere you can tell Flash what output device to send its audio to. In (for instance) Skype, I can choose the USB headphones/microphone as an output device, but Flash doesn't have any such configuration option, and I think it's quite simply defaulting to the wrong output device. There seem to be thousands of options in the system these days, with OSS, ALSA, Pulse and Jack, and I must admit I'm utterly confused about what they all are and how they interact. Even when I try to set the default output device in Preferences / Sound, I have at least three entries for the same set of USB headphones, and I have no idea which to choose.

So I don't know if this is a problem with Jaunty or with Flash, but I really think some helpful info and tutorials would go a long way here.

I'm using Jaunty 9.04 32-bit and found a solution that worked for me where all others failed. I followed the instructions in this thread - http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1130384 - to set up PulseAudio, and while playing a Flash video in Firefox, was able to switch the stream with Pulse to the correct output device (in my case, USB audio, which wasn't selected). I had to do the same thing with VLC player.

Thanks to the thread gynoid pointed out I was able to solve my problem. I am using a usb headphone adapter for my headset for recording purposes. Using the pulse audio tools mentioned in the thread he links to I was able to find out that the flash stream was simply pushing sound into the wrong device.

Same here. I just installed (clean install) kubuntu 9.04 and no sound in flashplayer. Generally sound works in amarok, dragon player etc, but no so in flashplayer.

I tried everything: reinstall flashplayer, downloading adobe-flashplayer ....

When I tested kubuntu (and ubuntu) Live CD it worked normally after installing flashplugin-nonfree package.

But after I installed kubuntu on my computer it didn't work though I did the same procedure as in Live CD.

Please fix that, because it is annoying.

My problem has been solved by linking /tmp/.esd-uid to /tmp/.esd

Uid is your user id, so you can see something like /tmp/.esd-1000 under /tmp.

Similar problem, but what I needed to do (after something half-fried my internal sound chip - I get a squeaky sound only on the right side) was to rename the kernel module - it was *snd*intel ("find /lib/modules/... | grep snd\*intel") so it would not load and the USB headphone device would then become the ONLY sound card. There is probably a way to reload the main sound.

But either Flash, vlc, etc. need to be fixed, or there needs to be a virtual sound device that implements the "first" device in such a way it can be switched between physical hardware.

This is a very ambiguous topic and I suspect it is actually two or more bugs.
However, it seems to me that one fix (mentioned bygynoid, kingaaronj, ttp and which also helped me) is definitive and would be as follows.

When choosing a default sound device in gnome-sound-properties, it should also change the default PulseAudio device as does the padevchooser package.

Perhaps. I am really not sure though. I haven't played around with this
since I figured out how to manage my sound devices in pulse.

I had the same problem on a fresh install (but with a copy of my home directory from the previous install), using the adobe flash plugin from apt (flashplugin-installer). All other sound applications were working, but not flash.

I noticed that pulseaudio did not start, but complaining about the pulse user not being in the pulse-rt group, so I just fixed that in /etc/group and now it works. You can also do that by running

sudo usermod -aG pulse-rt pulse

In the process I also deleted my old .pulse directory and .pulse-cookie. Don't know if that is necessary.

I now have sound with flash. Note that I dumped the inferior nspluginwrapper solution (why does Canonical insist on using that anyway?) and went straight to the source - I installed Adobe's 64 bit plugin. Works like a charm.

I believe a stable adobe 64 bit flash player for linux has only been
around a short time. I have been running 64 bit linux for over a year
and the only alternative earlier was the wrapper or at best unstable
beta versions. It was not so much Canonical insisting on it, it was
that it was the only solution v.s. nothing. Even for Jaunty.

I suspect if it proves stable, Karmic would include it and you should
make an effort to insure it is included in Karmic (i.e. you've tested
and it is stable - which it might not be in all installs).

Even now I have to do 32 bit for other multimedia stuff (mplayer in medibuntu).

lukyluke (luca-tagliacozzo) wrote :

I had the same problem.
I solved it by running alsamixer in a terminal window.

It looks that by default the PCM line of the sound card is muted. You can change the volume with the arrows, you select the PCM column and use the up arrow to increase the volume,
this explains why the other applications work.

Hope this help.
