So, we have a tripple confirmed "workaround" solution.

linux/Documentation/sound/alsa/ALSA-Configuration.txt

explicitly mentions:

options snd-hda-intel model="dell-3stack" for the "Dell Dimension E520", which does not work for posters.

whereas

options snd-hda-intel model="ref" works for Dell Dimension E520 users.

A regression in the Linux upstream kernel, or Ubuntu specific?
