Bug Description

I have installed the RC of Jaunty Netbook Remix on my Acer Aspire One 150 netbook. The Atheros wireless chipset is recognized automatically, but is disabled. The only way to enable it, is by doing this:

gksudo gedit /etc/modprobe.d/blacklist

Then add the following line in that empty text file:

blacklist acer_wmi

Save and close the text file. Then do a full reboot of the computer. Now wifi works.

Apparently this is a kernel bug. Hopefully this will be repaired before the final release. For your information I have attached the output of lshw.

This appears to be fixed. i'm using an Acer Aspire One with the official release of Jaunty and it works as expected out of the box.

Thanks for Blacklisting advice. Worked for me!

I used the official release of Jaunty on my Acer Aspire One having spent 3 days realising linpus is too toy-like (even if it is refreshingly stable).

I now have a system that looks and behaves like a 'proper' computer... just need the hot-swapping SD card glitch fixing.

Regards

Stewg.

If you're referring to Bug #271019
(https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/271019), i believe this is fixed with
a newer (1.05 Aspire One), or at least it works as expected for two of
us with that firmware version.

Ubuntu 9.10 Karmic Koala also suffers from this bug. However, the workaround I applied in 9.04 (mentioned in the first post in this thread) causes kernel instability in 9.10. I found out, that this was because I put the blacklist command in the wrong file.

That's because the blacklisting should be done by editing the existing /etc/modeprobe.d/blacklist.conf. And not by creating a new file named blacklist.

Blacklist.conf by default already contains a list of blacklisted kernel modules. You can simply add the following lines for acer_wmi:

# switch the wireless chipset on
blacklist acer_wmi

You can use the following command for editing:
gksudo gedit /etc/modprobe.d/blacklist.conf

Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu better. This bug did not have a package associated with it, which is important for ensuring that it gets looked at by the proper developers. You can learn more about finding the right package at https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Bugs/FindRightPackage , so I have classified this bug as a bug in linux kernel package.
