I can confirm this on my Toshiba Satellite A300. It fails with or without the proprietary ATI driver, with or without compositing on.

I was previously running Ubuntu 8.04 and both suspend and hibernate (and shut down) worked flawlessly all the time every time.

If more information is required please say so and I can go digging through log files.
