Okay I think applying Bob's patch and recompiling ath5k kernel module solved my system stability problem. No lockups (kernel panics) since I changed to the custom module. Someone needs to add this to the mainline linux kernel release, this is ridiculous that Ubuntu Karmic Koala 9.10 is shipping without sanity checks on ath5k
