This is a regression. My T42 thawed all right when I used Ubuntu 8.04.3.
I installed Ubuntu 9.10 from Desktop Edition CD keeping my ~/home from Ubuntu 8.04.3. Now my T42 crashes most times when thawing from hibernation. The Caps lock indicator keeps blinking. I could not yet isolate what component causes this crash.
