I've got the same problem on an Acer TravelMate 2492WLMi and Edgy.

I found these lines in dmesg:

[17179584.292000] Synaptics Touchpad, model: 1, fw: 6.2, id: 0x1280b1, caps: 0xa04713/0x204000
[17179584.324000] input: SynPS/2 Synaptics TouchPad as /class/input/input1
[17179584.328000] psmouse.c: TouchPad at isa0060/serio4/input0 lost sync at byte 1
