I found another solution that worked for me. With my nvidia driver enabled, I tried running the script from, http://www.thouret.co.uk/blog/2008/12/shell-script-for-linux-nvidia-kernel-module-laptop-brightness-workaround/
and it changes the brightness. Though it is temporary solution, gives me peace of mind till the issue is resolved!
I can try creating another bug, but will that be classified as duplicate to this?
