Is this reproducible say over 10 cycles. Has suspend ever worked in the past, if so which kernel release (cat /proc/version_signature)? Please include any information as to the circumstances leading up to this failure, for example did your battery run out? Did the machine lock up, did any messages come out? If it is reproducible could you try the suspend from VT1, press ctrl-alt-F1, login, and run pm-suspend there. If you could test and report back here that would be helpful.

status: New → Incomplete

I pressed a power button and chose standby (in polish is 'wstrzymanie',
not hibernation) to end session and to hold-up my system. Session was
ended and system was held-up correctly. Then I tried to wake up my
system and here was this reported problem. I saw a black screen with
same sentences. A part of those are:
[same numbers]: ata1: irq-stat 0x00000040 connection status changed
[same numbers]: ata1: SError:{DevExch}
[same numbers]: ata2: exception Emask 0x10 Sact 0x0 Serr 0x4000000
action 0xe frozen

If you need more I'll try to catch and write it down.
Then I pressed for about 5 sec the power button and turned on my
computer another time. After login I saw a bug report about kernel-bug.
And that's it.
I've repeated those action few times. It doesn't matter if my notebook
is pluged or not, every time I've got the same problem.

If you're interested to get more informations just write.

Marcin

I had the same problem at first with my HP Pavilion DV5-1124CA , using Intrepid, but now, I can successfully suspend and resume. Here's what I did (3 steps):

1. I'm now using kernel 2.26.7.11-generic kernel, as provided in the default repositories (and following recommended upgrade on Intrepid); With this kernel, I can suspend/resume, but then, keyboard/mouse are not functional. Other st

2. I'm using the kernel boot option i8042.reset, that must be added to the Grub menu.lst file, in /boot/grub, as in the following:

title Ubuntu 8.10, kernel 2.6.27-11-generic
root (hd0,4)
kernel /boot/vmlinuz-2.6.27-11-generic root=UUID=e805a537-55fa-4e4f-8f3d-866780911afc ro quiet splash i8042.reset
initrd /boot/initrd.img-2.6.27-11-generic
quiet
savedefault

3. Finally, I'm not sure if it's necessary, but I did a BIOS upgrade, that has been identified as a potential fix for another bug: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/301353

This BIOS upgrade is provided by HP (the link here is for my specific model; other DV5 models could have a similar upgrade available): http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/softwareList?os=2093&lc=en&dlc=en&cc=ca&lang=en&product=3828098

Oops, I'm not sure if my previous comment is really appropriate for this bug, since I realised that it is related to Ubuntu 9.04

Sorry if it's not helpful.

I have an HP pavilion dv5-1199el bought 4 days ago and i installed jaunty. I tried two times the suspend mode and the pc went on sleep correcly but on resuming....the first time I saw the same screen that has seen Marcin903, ctrl-alt-F1...F2...had no responses...the errors messages were cyclic, the second time black screen with a blinking cursor, ctrl-alt-F1 negative...

This sounds like a duplicate to bug #301353. Have you updated to the latest BIOS from HP (May release)? This fixes the problem.
