I was able to reboot the machine for you this morning without the splash screen on in the new kernel image and I retrieved the following messages from the call trace on:
Call Trace: ktime_get hrtimer_interrupt smp_apic_timer_interrupt die+0x1ac do_page_fault do_page_fault error_code change_page_attr raise_softirq_irqoff global_flush_tlb init_post kernel_init ret_from_fork kernel_init kernel_init Kernel_thread_helper
EIP: msecs_to_jiffies Kernel panic - not syncing: Fatal exception in interrupt
I can also confirm that booting with acpi=off does seem to allow the computer to boot. So I guess they don't call them the usual suspects for nothing.
Let me know if you need anything else.
