it does not with the travelmate 8100 here.
it powers down, everything is shutoff, expect the screen (which is black, but powered on) and a few other things i cant remember.
This is a very critical issue, it nearly killed my laptop twice because i put it in my backpack, while it was still on. the laptop was very hot when i took him out..
