Bug Description

Whenever I insert a disc in the drive of my laptop (Asus M51Va-AP063C, Drive: HL-DT-ST DVDRAM GSA-T50N rev. RR04 on ICH9M controller and ahci module), it gets stuck after spinning up and it doesn't let me eject the disc or read anything from it. To get it working again after it I need to power off the pc, wait for the disc to spin down and turn it on again.
This affects:
Ubuntu 8.10 (Intrepid Ibex, Ubuntu 2.6.27-10.20-generic)
uname -a: Linux lenneth 2.6.27-10-generic #1 SMP Fri Nov 21 19:19:18 UTC 2008 x86_64 GNU/Linux
Attached the output of dmesg and lspci.

I forgot to mention that this drive works on other computers, a TSSTcorp TS-L633A works in this computer and the bug does not show up on Microsoft Windows Vista or setting the ICH9M SATA Controller in IDE compatibility mode. This bug shows up on all non microsoft and non EBIOS using OSes.

This bug is very likely a duplicate of bug #289261.

Are you sure the bug does not occur in Vista in AHCI mode?

I had to try quite hard in XP but it occurred there and filled up my event log.

See my comment in bug #289261. It seems that this is a firmware bug in firmware revision RR04 of this drive.

It seems so. Asus however doesn't give me another one to fix this.

Hi marcus905,

This bug was reported a while ago and there hasn't been any activity in it recently. We were wondering if this is still an issue? Can you try with the latest development release of Ubuntu? ISO CD images are available from http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/releases/lucid.

If it remains an issue, could you run the following command from a Terminal (Applications->Accessories->Terminal). It will automatically gather and attach updated debug information to this report.

apport-collect -p linux 309384

Also, if you could test the latest upstream kernel available that would be great. It will allow additional upstream developers to examine the issue. Refer to https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelMainlineBuilds . Once you've tested the upstream kernel, please remove the 'needs-upstream-testing' tag. This can be done by clicking on the yellow pencil icon next to the tag located at the bottom of the bug description and deleting the 'needs-upstream-testing' text. Please let us know your results.

Thanks in advance.

It's a firmware bug, corrected in R?05 and newer. It can however be
worked around by silently filtering all Inquiry SCSI commands and
hardcding the response as a string (in the driver maybe) as the drive
freezes the exact moment it receives that command and then needs to be
power cycled.

Alternatively all drives (R???) can be updated with a previously
linked updater that will upgrade all drives to the RR07 revision that
has been fixed.

I can confirm that this bug also occurs on Windows Seven x64.
But there is no official firmware of the driver to correct this bug...

Download and flash this. Voids your warranty, but it worked for the
8000+ people that downloaded it.

Fixable by flashing in Windows the firmware downloadable here:

Doing so, however voids the warranty.
