We do not know what's inside the closed source ATI driver, thus have no idea if that helps those drivers. Basically, the backports-modules package includes drivers back ported from more recent kernel, which are normally pretty safe. Given the result, I'd like to first close this bug atm. Thanks very much for the testing.
