Ok I have no idea what the kernel folks did, but I just upgraded to 2.6.27-11-generic and everything works like a charm, like in the "old" days.
This comes in handy as I was about to downgrade. I wonder though if the bug will come up again when I upgrade Jaunty, as Dana seems to have the same problem under a more recent kernel.
