I can confirm that this seems fixed in compat wireless (I tested 2009-01-17)

Stock 2.6.28-4 kernel down 1.2 MB/s up 250 kb/s
with compat-wireless down 1.4 MB/s up 1.6 MB/s

These speeds are now back to what I had with Hardy - let's hope it gets in to Jaunty :)
