Fridtjof, thank-you. It looks like the same cause as zippidy_josh reported.

[10698.992081] ata1: SATA link up 3.0 Gbps (SStatus 123 SControl 300)

Fridtjof, zippyidy_josh, could both attach the system PCI configuration from:

 sudo lspci -vvnn

I'm wondering if there's a common hardware device here, or whether it is an issue with the ata_piix / libata drivers.
