I edited /etc/modprobe.d/blacklist to blacklist the madwifi proprietary drivers ath_pci and ath_hal, and removed the blacklist on ath5k. Then I rebooted.
Yes! It works! lspci confirms ath5k is now acting as the driver and iwconfig confirms that I have a wlan0 virtual device. Perhaps the problem resulted from a conflict with the previously-installed madwifi drivers. Now to test whether the connexion survives a standby...!
