It happens for me on 2.6.31-3-generic #19-Ubuntu SMP, running on a Intel(R) Pentium(R) 4 CPU 3.20GHz with two hyperthreads.
It does not involve any background processes (as far as I can tell).
It seems to happen when RAM gets tight (I run one or two gitk's over the linux kernel and `free -m` reports little improvement).
As a side note on 2.6.31-3-generic it happens quite frequently, but I don' recall seeing it on 2.6.31-2-generic.
Should I file a separate bug?
