I am also hit by this bug on my work PC (amd64 and fully updated Ubuntu 8.10).
The issue usually shows up every work day. Gnome fully freeze up, even mouse cursor cant move.
If you leave the computer alone for a couple of minutes it resumes to working state.
Often the freeze happens in combination with other network or disk-heavy tasks being run, but I have not figured any way to clearly reproduce it.
I have 2 laptops and 1 home pc that also runs 64-bit ubuntu 8.10 and none of those computers show this issue. I believe it is some hardware combination & kernel issue.
