Detailed investigation using kernel.org kernels:

2.6.24.7: hangs on resume (like Ubuntu 2.6.24-19.36)
2.6.25.15: works (with appropriate HAL quirks)
2.6.26.2: hangs on suspend

Ubuntu 8.10 Alpha (Kernel 2.6.26) also hangs on suspend.
