Same problem with an Acer Travelmate 632. The only solution i have found is to boot with "acpi=off" or "acpi=ht", but with these options I lose battery status reporting and fan is making a terrible noise.
I tried all boot options of https://wiki.ubuntu.com/DebuggingACPI without success.
Ubuntu Hardy. I have no problems with Gutsy or Feisty.
