Comment 36 for bug 228633

I have been having this problem since June 2007. During that time I upgraded and installed all the patches recommended by Ubuntu. I am now at 8.04. The crashes occure totally randomly. I usually get about 30 minutes before the crash. If I restart from XP the boot into Ubuntu fails sometimes. Powering off and then back on allows me to get into Ubuntu. It also fails when I am using FireFox to surf the net. Sometimes when I leave my computer on and the screen saver is up it happens. I have to power down and reboot to recover. I have looked in some log files but since I am a novice I have not seen anything that looks like it could be a cause. This is a dual boot machine and XP works fine so I think it is a software problem. This is an AMD machine. Any troubleshoot tactics would be appreciated.
