I reported a related bug on bugzilla.kernel.org back in 2009. Basically there was a regression in the kernel logic for detecting 40 and 80 wire PATA cables.

The bug was marked as WON'T FIX but may be related:

Cannot read CD: "Logical unit communication CRC error"
