As petski points out, this is very likely the same issue as https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/157691 because:
- it affects the HP 6710b (comment #3) - "nosmp" avoids the bug (comment #20) - crash is related to lid event
User-mode code changes are not a fix for a kernel panic, so any hotkey-setup or similar changes are at best a band-aid.
